Our Little Social Media Experiment

For anyone who doesn’t know, engaging in Social Media is basically the act of communicating with friends, colleagues or businesses through web or mobile based platforms. The most popular of these platforms, which you will undoubtedly have heard of, are Facebook, Twitter, Linked In and more recently Google+. On top of these there are a wide range of smaller niche ventures starting up every week, a few of which are discussed in this article by our partner Marke2ing.

Now, anyone who runs their own business and is faced with the constant dilemma of to how to promote that business in a cost effective manner, will most certainly have heard people talk in terms of “engaging in social marketing”. But we are sure that a lot of people, like us, are not entirely sure how effective a technique that really is, especially given the amount of time that you will undoubtedly need to spend engaging successfully.
It is with this in mind that we plan to run our own “little social media experiment”.

At the time of writing this article, we like many other businesses have our own account with the four major social media sites, but like most, our participation is somewhat limited…

As part of our experiment, over the course of the next six months, we plan to become a lot more active on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. Using these social platforms, we plan to promote a series of small competitions, special offers, development & design related articles, general services, things of interest in the Newcastle area, whilst also engaging with followers as often as possible.

Our competitions will run every fortnight and will be very simple, asking easy or thought provoking questions, or simply requesting a ‘retweet’, ‘like ‘ or ‘Google+ vote’. Prizes will include:

• General website review
• Onsite SEO make-over
• Onsite Performance make-over (looking specifically at reducing page load times)
• One page holding site (designed and hosted)
• Google analytics installation and tuition
• Social Media Review
• Rolling flash advert (for your website)
• Logo Design (one concept)
• Business Card Design
• Letterhead Design
• Flyer Design
• Poster Design
• One template for email marketing campaign

(Prizes will be subject to a minimum of 10 people participating in competition)

At the end of every month, we will do a small summary on the effect of the months “social engagement”, listing the number of new followers on each of the social mediums, together with sharing data from our analytics package, showing which of the communications resulted in the most traffic to our site and what those visitors did when they got there…
